Itching for an explanation
Article Abstract:
Itch is a unique and unpleasant sensation felt by the skin's superficial layers, the respiratory tract and by mucous membranes. This sensory experience can be induced using histamine and a variety of other chemicals that have excitatory effects on unmyelinated afferent fibers. Despite the amount of experimental work however, very little is known about itch and no accepted theory on the neuronal basis of the sensation has been able to shed light on its characteristics comprehensively.
