Weight history, glucose intolerance, and insulin levels in middle-aged Swedish men
Article Abstract:
In 3,128 Swedish men 35-56 years of age, weight history, glucose intolerance, and insulin levels have been studied to find the relationship of weight history to glucose intolerance. Of those in the study, 52% had a family background of diabetes mellitus. It appears that obesity lowers glucose tolerance by progressively increasing insulin resistance. Where there is prolonged duration, the mechanism appears to be decreased insulin secretion.

Birth-cohort phenomenon in the time trends of mortality from ulcerative colitis
Article Abstract:
Research concerning the incidence of ulcerative colitis in six western nations over five decades in the 19th century is discussed. A study of death certificates showed a similar pattern of the disease, an indication that ulcerative colitis is strongly influenced by environmental risk factors.
