Searching for the evidence
Article Abstract:
The location and selection of evidence for evidence-based nursing practice involves using a range of search tools. Nurses looking for evidence concerning a clinical practice must first make sure they know exactly what they are looking for. They should consider the terminology surrounding the subject and they should define their search strategy. Useful search tools will include the internet, computerized databases and the Cochrane Library. The process of searching may help to clarify the search terms and methodology, and the healthcare librarian will be a further source of help.

A&E nurses and alcohol-related attendances
Article Abstract:
Training and a standardized screening method could help nurses play a vital role in helping to identify patients presenting at accident and emergency units through alcohol-related illness or accidents. Questionnaires can be a useful assessment tool to collect data relating to alcohol consumption habits of patients. Results can be used to help identify patients most at risk from alcohol abuse. Nurses should be trained to offer help to those found to be high consumers of alcohol, although the issue of time is a limiting factor in an accident and emergency unit.
