What makes a good psychiatric nurse?
Article Abstract:
Students are not prepared with sufficient knowledge of mental illness by their nursing school, according to a survey of 63 participants including nurses, medical practitioners and clients. A good psychiatric nurse sees clients as individuals, is good at communicating and listening and shows empathy. Their 'practical' skills are highly placed. Communication with the school is inadequate, according to almost half of those surveyed, and communication should be developed between the multidisciplinary team members and the school. Skills developed in clinical areas would be lost by the increased academic preparation of psychiatric nurses under Project 2000. The study follows suggestions that nurses do not always put school teachings into practice when working in clinical areas.

Detaining patients: a study of nurses' holding powers
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken at Leicester General Hospital Brandon Unit, England, has considered psychiatric nurses' use of section 5(4) of the 1983 Mental Health Act to detain patients. It was found that nurses rarely use this power, possibly because a doctor is always on call. The likelihood of section 5(4) application varies according to the time of day.

Evidence-based pyschological interventions in mental health nursing
Article Abstract:
There is a large volume of research evidence demonstrating the therapeutic benefits of psychological interventions other than cognitive behaviour therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy. Any type of counselling that creates some form of structure and fosters a therapeutic link between the nurse and the client can be regarded as evidence-based.
