To ensure that physicians are not running the risk of being charged with fraud in regards to Medicare, they should make sure that their coding is correct and well-documented in their patients' records. Guidelines to Medicare evaluation and management will not be available from the HCFA until Jul 1998, but physicians can use the CPT-4, the Physicians' Current Procedural Terminology, Fourth Edition.

AMA response to e&m documentation guidelines
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn is actively working to help physicians comply with the Health Care Financing Administration's 1997 revised Documentation Guidelines for Evaluation and Management Services. Physicians are confused by the revised guidelines, and the AMA is negotiating with the HCFA for corrections to the actual guidelines, followed by education programs for physicians.
