Adverse reaction
Article Abstract:
Pharmacists in the US worry that managed care's tightened access to drugs through use of formularies and the increasing availability of automated drug dispensers may eliminate the majority of their profession within a couple of decades. The American Pharmaceutical Assn (APhA) is therefore campaigning to raise public and government awareness of the role pharmacists play in improving patient outcomes and reducing costs by preventing physician prescription errors. The APhA supported a study by the University of Arizona that estimated the cost and mortality associated with drug-related problems, but the report was criticized by many who questioned its methodology and results. Pharmacists are counseled not to shake patients' faith in the medical system as a whole by causing alarm over prescription errors.

Breast cancer warrior: Dr. Susan Love's crusade against the killer disease has some would-be allies up in arms
Article Abstract:
Dr. Susan Love founded the National Breast Cancer Coalition, a coalition of 140 cancer organizations, in 1991. Through lobbying and other political action, the group has managed to increase spending on breast cancer research from $93 million in 1991 to $197 million in 1993. Love is a controversial figure; researchers and physicians object to her politicization of breast cancer. However, the Women's Congressional Caucus found in 1989 that only 15% of resources spent at the National Institutes of Health, funds authorized by Congress, were devoted to women's health issues.
