What's in a (Drug) Name? Plenty!
Article Abstract:
The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the United States Adopted Names (USAN) Council have proposed changing the generic names of the drugs amrinone and amiodarone. Amrinone makes the heart beat stronger and amiodarone is an anti-arrhythmic drug. Eleven medication errors and one death have occurred when one drug was mistakenly given instead of the other. Amrinone will be changed to inamrinone and amiodarone will be changed to camiodarone. The proposed name changes will take effect July 1, 2000. Health care professionals and pharmacists can send their comments to the USP and USAN Council.
