When Is Breastfeeding Not Best? The Dilemma Facing HIV-Infected Women in Resource-Poor Settings
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women in poor countries who are HIV-positive face a real dilemma when their baby is born. Research has shown that breastfeeding can transmit the virus to the baby. The risk seems to be greatest during the first six months of life. However, in many poor countries, the lack of safe drinking water makes the use of infant formulas difficult. There may also be social stigmas against the use of infant formula. Women can be tested for HIV and given AIDS drugs to lower the risk of transmission. But many poor women may not have access to HIV testing facilities.

Breastfeeding in Belarus
Article Abstract:
A group of 17,000 mothers and their babies should be followed for many years to determine whether the babies who were breastfed have better health outcomes as adults than those who were not. The initial study published in 2001 showed that the breastfed babies were less likely to develop gastrointestinal illness or allergic diseases.

A 35-Year-Old Woman Experiencing Difficulty With Breastfeeding
Article Abstract:
There are many health benefits of breast feeding, both for the mother and baby. Breastfed babies are healthier, and breast feeding helps the uterus to return to a normal state. The only contraindication to breast feeding is HIV infection in the mother and lactose intolerance in the baby.
