Where faith meets science
Article Abstract:
The Congressionally-mandated Office of Alternative Medicine is a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The office, with a $2 million budget, provides seed money for research into alternative therapies. Grant applications receive the standard NIH review process, and alternative medicine proponents say that valuable partnerships may be formed merely in applying for the $30,000 grants. In addition, the office contributes funds to clinical research within the NIH that involves alternative therapies. The difficulties involved in designing clinical trials for alternative therapies are described.

Advising parents about pesticide peril, in wake of studies
Article Abstract:
Two scientific reports have pointed to the fact that children may be receiving relatively high doses of pesticides. Physicians are advising parents to continue to feed children plenty of fruits and vegetables but to work to reform the pesticide system. For example, a report by the Environmental Working Group proposed that the government begin to phase out pesticides that put children at the most risk and to develop a strict standard for pesticides in food. In addition, the group suggested that a voluntary standard be instituted to disallow pesticide residues in food.

Toughing it out
Article Abstract:
Persian Gulf War POW Dr. Rhonda Cornum was shot down in a helicopter, severely injured, sexually assaulted and held captive for seven days in Iraq. Eventually the flight surgeon was released to the Red Cross and credits her survival to a large measure of personal stoicism. She has written a book about her ordeal entitled 'She Went to War: The Rhonda Cornum Story.' Cornum, who chose medicine as 'a career maneuver', now lives with family on a farm in the Florida panhandle and works at Fort Rucker, AL.
