Afghanistan's gender apartheid
Article Abstract:
Afghanistan's strict Islamic Taliban culture restricts women to a limited amount of health care because they can not be treated by male doctors or nurses. They can be treated in segregated units although these facilities are limited. Hygiene and sanitation are often inadequate, while an almost total lack of antenatal care can lead to serious obstetric complications. Health facilities have been established by outside health organisations, such as the Red Cross, which try to operate try within Taliban regulations.
