Why are older people left out?

Older people with mental health problems receive very little media attention in the UK. Indeed, policymakers seem to display ageism, focusing on the dangers presented by younger people who are mentally ill. It is vital that older people are able to access the same services as younger people.

Loneliness in the elderly can have a direct effect on their health. Issues concerning the formal recognition, assessment and treatment of loneliness are presented. The case study of an 84-year old widow is discussed.
