There is a countrywide shortage of nurses which has led to bed closures and the cancellation of elective surgery, however the Department of Health claims there is a match between supply and demand, although there are some regional difficulties. Many hospitals cannot find newly qualified nurses and applications to colleges from potential nurses are down.

Issues are presented concerning the misleading impression about nursing given to the general public by television medical dramas. A questionnaire which revealed the discrepancy between reality and expectancy among student nurses is discussed.
