Doctors, who may be the sole outside contact of elderly patients, must become involved in diagnosing and preventing abuse. The AMA has issued guidelines to help physicians detect and treat elderly persons suffering from neglect and physical, psychological or financial abuse. The program, part of the AMA Physicians' Campaign Against Family Violence, reminds physicians to order tests if suspicious conditions appear and to intervene with hospitalization if necessary.

Family physician listens, and teaches what he learned
Article Abstract:
Medical care that includes treating all aspects of a patient's life is a rewarding experience, according to one family physician. Patients may need not only physical help, but also mental and emotional help as well. One physician's experience with a an emotional young child allowed him to prescribed a treatment program aimed at the child's emotional health.
