Assessing the effectiveness of technology transfer from US government R&D laboratories: the impact of market orientation
Article Abstract:
Government research laboratories in the US have been steadily moving toward a more commercial orientation. Analyses of data from the the National Comparative R&D Project show that laboratories involved in multi-faceted projects with various goals can be most effective in transferring technology to commercial enterprise. This effectiveness may be further enhanced by cooperation with commerce and industry and decreased bureaucratization. The reorientation of federal laboratories toward commercial research must, however, be tempered to allow commercial laboratories to compete in research.

Applied research and industrial development in East Germany: international comparison by performance indicators
Article Abstract:
Research shows the similarities between East Germany's industrial research and development (R&D) activities and those of more developed countries. In spite of this, a late-1980s drop in East German R&D provides a particular instance of study, allowing the correlation of R&D activity to East German technical and economic problems. Results also highlight a need for management and workforce reorientation to adapt product research and development to market conditions.

Towards the maturity stage: an insight into the performance of French technopoles
Article Abstract:
Technopoles are territorialized initiatives in France aimed at advancing educational and public R&D. They are managed by local or regional groups. The more successful technopoles operate mainly under the 'agglomeration' model, which targets economic development in the local area and surroundings. Among the outcomes that define a successful technopole are diffusion of innovations and new innovative ventures.
