Inventions and patents at universities: the case of Chalmers Univesity of Technology
Article Abstract:
University inventions in Sweden are not controlled by the government, unlike in the US where a cooperative authority for patents exists. A case study involving the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden shows that the relevance of university research to society's needs has increased dramatically. The majority of the patents have been contributed by professors and associate professors in the university, accounting for 2/3 of the total patents. In contrast, the majority of patents in spin-off companies has been awarded to post-graduate and under-graduate students. This implies that university patents have a strong impact on Sweden's economy.

Abilities and competencies required, particularly by small firms, to identify and acquire new tchnology
Article Abstract:
Consideration of the concepts 'configuring the user' and 'performing community' helps in understanding a problem confronting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involving identification and acquisition of new technology from universities. The concept of 'configuring the user' can be used to assess the relationship between universities and SMEs with regards to their relative location at either side of a social organizational divide. Such concept stresses the importance of social distance between SME and the university in the utilization and exploitation of a new technology.
