Parks Gordon was the first African-American to write, produce, and direct a feature film for a major Hollywood studio based on the screen version of The Learning Tree (1969). As a photographer he worked for Glamour, Vogue and Life magazines and one of his photo essays for Life led to his book Flavio (1978), about a poor, gravely ill Brazilian boy for whom he was instrumental in obtaining lifesaving medical treatment.

Alvarez Bravo, Manuel
Article Abstract:
Mexico's exterior and the theme of death have been important subjects for Alvarez Bravo's surrealistic work. Two photographs that he considers as surrealistic are 'La buena fama durmiendo' and 'The Good Reputation Sleeping.' The influence of surrealism on Alvarez Bravo's work is discussed.

Manuel Alvarez Bravo, a photographer passed away on October 19, 2002. He was Mexico's premier photo-documentarian and translated the modern photographic vocabulary into a Mexican vernacular.
