Chemist Jacqueline K. Barton became the first woman to win the National Science Foundation's Alan T. Waterman Award, the US federal government's highest honor for scientists 35 years or younger for her pioneering creation and use of chemical 'tools' made with metallic compounds. Barton founded GeneOhm Sciences in 2001 for developing nucleic-acid-based tests to detect and identify infectious agents and genetic variations more rapidly than is possible with other methods.
