The four-star general Peter Pace of the US Marine Corps was sworn in as the 16th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the highest military rank in the nation after the president) on September 30, 2005. Pace, who has 39 years of military service, will likely be judged in his role as chairman by the effectiveness of his military advice concerning the involvement of the US forces in the Middle East.
