Vilma Martinez, a potential high-court nominee and a former president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF), is credited for improving MALDEF on an organizational and financial level and for aggressively [promoting the group's agenda in the courts. She was honored with Columbia Law School's Medal for Excellence in 1978 and later received a Medal for Excellence from Columbia University and MALDEF honored her with Valerie Kantor Award for Extraordinary Achievement for her contributions to the organization.
