Collector's Corner: Bakelite
Article Abstract:
A study reveals that in the mid 1970's artist and flea market junkie Andy Warhol had a huge collection of Bakelite carvings, which was sold at Sotheby's New York in 1988 causing an increase in price and interest in them. Bakelite jewelry was also very popular and the jewelry can be found in many Art Deco shops and vintage clothing stores and Skinner Auctioneers featured a selection of vintage Bakelite in its Fine Jewelry auction consisting of belt buckles, frog and horse brooches and carved fish bangles and it was a prosperous success.

A rare early handwritten letter from Marilyn Monroe, an actress to her half-sister Bernice was auctioned for $42,000 at the Film and Entertainment auction at Christie's. The letter estimated to be auctioned for $20,000-$30,000 offers a glimpse into her family relationships and was written before she became famous.
