McGuckin Hardware: the Denver area's home improvement gem
Article Abstract:
McGuckin Hardware manager Randy Dilkes says that the secret to the stores's success is its attempt to befriend anyone who enters the store. Described by many as the beat hardware store in the world, McGuckin's salespeople know their products, which are stocked to the ceiling. In sharp contrast to the huge box stores, McGuckin evokes friendliness and personal attention, and although it is not an old-fashioned store, it is operated like one.

Denver: after the gold rush
Article Abstract:
Opinions are mixed over the continued expansion into Denver, CO, of such big-box formats as Home Depot at a time when the city's boom times are over. While some see a fallout in the future of large stores, others believe that the stores will benefit from Denver's growth period. The city experienced phenomenal growth between 1989 and 1994, which in turn produced residential and retail space, the underpinning for home improvement sales.
