New truck design helps retailers deliver

Home center stores Hechinger Co., in a joint venture with Penske Truck Leasing and Morgan Corp., has produced a custom-designed delivery truck that can fulfill all the box-truck and flatbed functions and enhance deliveries both to customers and within the organization. The new delivery truck can carry a forklift truck to facilitate heavy lubber and appliance deliveries, can be unleaded from either side, is waterproof and can deliver large and heavy items and small and fragile items on the same load. It will eliminate the need for two to three trucks and reduce the number of deliveries.

Home center stores are increasing their selection of outdoor power equipment to keep up with the increase in consumer demand for the products. Lowe's has added 25 types of string trimmers, 15 tractors and 20 walk-behinds. Orchard Supply Hardware has created a comprehensive department for outdoor power equipment that is given more prominence in some of its stores. Equipment manufacturers are more willing to sell to chain stores.

Hand-powered mowers a 'reel' niche

Homeowners with small lawns prefer reel mowers over electric- or gas-powered equipment according to an American Lawn Mower Co/Great States Corp survey. Environmentalism, lower costs, and simple maintenance also motivate consumers to purchase reel mowers. Mower manufacturers have developed low-maintenance, lighter, and easier to handle reel mowers. Reel mowers sell at prices ranging from $65-$185, are easier to store and use.
