The average selling price for an object on the Internet is a far more reliable indicator of an object's secondary market resale value than field or price guide values. Internet auction site eBay has caused potential buyers to rethink the scarcity of a particular object and a collector has no bargaining rights when his rivals own the same sample.

Shifting baselines

Daniel Pauly, a fisheries biologist at the University of British Columbia in Canada coined the term shifting baselines in 1995. Shifting baselines are the chronic, slow, hard-to-notice changes in things, from the disappearance of birds and frogs in the countryside to the increased drive time from Los Angeles to San Diego.
