Why aren't more b-i-yers b-i-ying?
Article Abstract:
The buy-it-yourself home-improvement market is not growing at the pace predicted in the 1980s, and some large building supplies retailers are wondering why. One reason may be that older people are healthier and more active than they used to be, meaning that they can still engage in do-it-yourself projects. Another reason could be that homeowners, dissatisfied with the service they receive at home center stores, do not expect those stores' contract installers to perform well.

Ernst Home & Nursery reported its financial results for the 2nd qtr ended April 27, 1996. The home center chain's sales decreased 16.9%, and its same-store sales dropped 20.3%. The company relates its unsatisfactory financial results to a decrease in home improvement sales, inventory problems, and bad weather. Ernst plans a toll-free information hotline for product ordering and a homepage on the World Wide Web.
