Why lumber isn't what it used to be
Article Abstract:
New home buyers, the construction industry and home center stores have expressed interest in steel and other materials to be used as substitutes for lumber as lumber's quantity and quality have diminished and prices have increased. Lumber critics blame new technologies that seek maximum yield at the cost of quality, use of poor quality private land 2nd and 4th growth timber, and supply of artificially matured but weaker quick grown trees for modern lumber's visual and structural blemishes.

High lumber prices make dealers, builders nervous
Article Abstract:
Lumber prices continue to spiral during 1996, increasing 30% from Jan 5 to June 7. Prices rose in response to several factors, including an increase in building and concerns about the Canadian lumber agreement, which would limit lumber cutting. Strong demand and low inventory levels has forced builders to consider using alternative building materials. Dealers are looking to other countries for lumber supplies.
