Preparing the soil, weeding, attending to perennials and planting bulbs are a few tasks gardeners should do in the fall and winter to ensure less work and more beauty in the spring and summer garden. Tips are given on such chores as adding nutrients to the soil, mulching, and bulb planting.

The aristocratic daylily

There are approximately 34,000 daylily cultivars that are registered with the American Hemerocallis Society. They fall into three groups: dormants, evergreens and semi-evergreens. Dormants are the hardiest, but like other daylilies require a half-day of sun.

Blue spruce

The blue spruce is a welcomed tree in landscape gardening because of its rare bluish hue. The color is at its peak in the spring and early summer. The actual source of the color is from a powder which the tree itself produces.
