Utility gets current with family care
Article Abstract:
The Snohomish County (Washington State) Public Utility District (SCPUD) offers its employees a fringe benefits plan oriented toward family programs as part of a one-year pilot program started in the summer of 1990. SCPUD currently offers or is planning to offer direct benefits that include a cafeteria plan with flexible spending accounts, direct reimbursement for sick-child care costs, and an employee assistance program for counseling services. Indirect benefits offered or in planning stages include flexible work hours, part-time work and job sharing, and flexible leave. In the summer of 1991, the utility will evaluate the success of the pilot program in order to determine if the benefits meet employee needs, and which benefits will be kept, changed, or eliminated.

Rapporteur's report: emerging models of worker participation and representation
Article Abstract:
Political, economic, technical and industrial developments have prompted many changes in traditional forms of worker representation over recent years. It is now widely agreed that there is an urgent need to develop new models of participation and representation, and that traditional institutions may have to be abolished or radically altered. Many models of new approaches to worker participation and representation have been put forward, varying according to factors such as state interference and unionisation.
