A sporting chance of development
Article Abstract:
Organizations can base their management development programs on the same principles used by athletic coaches. The Grass Roots motivation and training group uses athletic principles to teach principles of management. Olympic gold medalist David Hemery, former hockey coach David Whitaker, and former race-car driver John Whitmore use coaching techniques to help managers motivate employees. The group's philosophy is that helping employees develop their own solution to problems is more effective than telling them what to do. The group uses physical activities in its training courses to demonstrate management principles. For example, a skiing race using teams of five people sharing three pairs of skis demonstrates the importance of teamwork.

Managing to give a good local service
Article Abstract:
The multi-disciplinary approach refers to the kind of training that cuts across professional divisions and permits people from different disciplines to participate in the same programs. Multi-disciplinary training offers several advantages, including giving different professional groups the chance to come into contact with one another, and widening the knowledge of participants by not confining them only to experiences that are directly related to their field. This approach, which has long been practiced by the Milton Keynes Hospital, is now being applied to developing public sector managers.

Making waves
Article Abstract:
Yorkshire Water's management development program helped changed managers' attitudes about their jobs. Yorkshire Water developed the program after the government ordered the organization to reduce its annual operating costs by 9 million pounds. The cost reduction could only be achieved by eliminating approximately 600 jobs, and the 'Managing for productivity' program was designed to help managers deal with the changes. The 14-module program, which focused on participatory management, helped managers realize that other managers had differing perceptions about the organization.
