American Airlines: a profile in employee involvement
Article Abstract:
The strong commitment of employees at American Airlines Inc to environmental conservation is evident in its numerous environmental activities and programs. An in-house recycling program, for one, has flight attendants collecting empty aluminum softdrink cans for recycling by cabin-service employees. The recycling program was the suggestion of flight attendant Jacki Graham as channeled through the Quality of Work Life program of the human resources department. Outside of the company, American Airlines employees have been helping cleanup efforts at prairie areas in Chicago, IL, Dallas, Fort Worth, TX, and Sacramento and Stockton, CA through a joint effort with The Nature Conservancy. Employees have also purchased environmentally endangered land in the Couchville Cedar Glade area in Tennessee through funds generated from its own recycling efforts.

How HR managers help companies become green
Article Abstract:
Human resources (HR) departments can play a critical role in increasing employees' awareness of the importance of establishing in-house recycling programs based on environmental concerns. The success of any environmental program will depend on the extent of commitment given to it by employees. The HR department can impart to employees the value of the environmental effort through extensive interorganizational communications campaigns. These campaigns can be facilitated through corporate newsletters, bulletin board postings, and videos on recycling. Employees must be made to understand that the recycling program is being established to maximize the usage of office materials, provide employees with the means to make a personal contribution to the environmental effort, and consequently increasing job satisfaction levels.

The greening of HR
Article Abstract:
The increasing awareness among employees of the need to protect and conserve the environment has resulted in the establishment of in-house environmental programs by companies. These programs provide employees with the opportunity to participate in the recycling of office materials, the lowering of consumption levels of these materials, and the cleanup of natural areas. By responding to the clamor for environmental action of employees, companies are not only helping preserve the environment but are also increasing job satisfaction and realizing tremendous savings for the company from the effort. Marriott Residence Inn in Bethesda, MD, T Rowe Price Associates Inc, and Nordstrom are some of the firms which have established internal recycling programs as a result of employee suggestions.
