An heir care success story
Article Abstract:
Lincoln National Corp's child care administrator Madeleine Baker believes that a company-sponsored referral service of child-care providers is a good response to the work and family issue. In a presentation of the company's unique program at the American Management Assn's 59th Annual Human Resources Conference in Apr 1988, Baker and senior human resources VP Richard J. Vicars stressed the support of management and the advantages compared with on-site child-care facilities. All potential providers submit to an inspection, attend an eight-hour training session, and agree to follow common rules. Employees understand that the database of current openings is an employee benefit without company endorsement or recommendation of any provider. The annual cost is about $50,000 or $12 per employee.

A trauma response program meets the needs of troubled employees
Article Abstract:
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Trauma Response Program is designed to provide an immediate response to serious work-related accidents or traumatic experiences encountered on the job, and serves as an educational program for supervisors. Trauma following work-related accidents can provoke emotional, cognitive, and physical reactions that can lead to maladaptive behavior and serious mental health problems. Length of recovery from accidents depends on the nature and severity of an incident, past employee experiences, and the employee's state of mind at the time an incident occurs. The department keeps five employee assistance staff counselors on 24-hour call.

'This program has offered people a second change.' (employment training program for the handicapped)
Article Abstract:
Two programs have provided new avenues for handicapped employees. E.F. Hutton teamed with the New York Society for the Deaf to recruit 11 trainees for a special word processing program. A teacher familiar with sign language taught the students, who were all hired by Hutton. In Orange County, California, Goodwill Industries set up a program that also teaches word processing skills to handicapped people. This 18 week course enrolled 20 students in its first class, and will continue as long as there is a need in the area.
