Awards energize a suggestion program
Article Abstract:
Sensible Management and Accounts Receivable Techniques is a formally defined employee suggestion system that has been proven successful from 1987 to 1992. The Internal Medicine Business Office of Washington University School of Medicine has made use of the simple technique which requires only that employees provide a summarized information sheet regarding an identified problem including suggested solutions and benefits. All suggestions are then recognized by management and the best ones resulting in memorable rewards. Employees from the assistant supervisor level down are eligible to join in the program. Program success requires that management provide full support and that personnel be oriented towards productivity improvements. The program has enabled the university to achieve a suggestion average that, as of 1992, is 11 times better than the national average.

Welcome to business 101, comrades
Article Abstract:
The USSR, in its transition to a more open economy under perestroika, is in critical need of managerial skills. Beginning in Nov 89, 15 managers from the USSR participated in a three-month training program at the California State University at Hayward. The program was conducted under a contract between the University and the Soviet Ministry of Aviation Industries. The goals of the managers participating in the program where to learn about the workings of a free market economy, to learn how to implement joint ventures with US companies by familiarizing themselves with US business practices; and to gain an appreciation of US culture. An important focus of the managers was in the area of labor dispute resolution since the new openness in the USSR has given rise to pressures from labor.
