Beyond the mechanics of HRD
Article Abstract:
Integrating the human resource function into a business' organizational structure enables management to develop the skills, flexibility, innovative abilities, and productivity of employees, as illustrated by the cases of Kwik-Fit Centres and ICI Grangemouth. Companies can implement integrated human resource management by: disseminating corporate goals and objectives to employees; cultivating individual and group behavior in the company that is conducive to growth; establishing a system for providing employees with information, feedback, and support; creating opportunities for growth; and providing a physical environment that supports teamwork. After implementing an integrated management system, companies should replace appraisal systems with continuous assessment in order to encourage employee development.

Preparing the groundwork to track the high fliers
Article Abstract:
Gatwick Airport experienced many changes when it was privatized in 1987, and as a result, the airport has had to develop new personnel practices including a new succession planning system. In the process of implementing the system, Gatwick management had to determine future business plans and skill levels among management. Other data needed from the system included data on projecting training and development needs. The computer system that was eventually implemented had three central elements: a skills and performance profile; an individual succession plan; and a development and training profile. The system also contained a series of inquiries and modeling abilities which enabled management to engage in job/skills matching, successor identification; and interactive manpower planning.
