Biggest ever study of rail safety by inspectorate
Article Abstract:
Railtrack's safety management is being investigated by the Railway Inspectorate to establish whether any adverse effects are being caused by the use of external contractors. The number of rail accidents in the United Kingdom for 1994/5 are similar to that of the previous year, and less fires and vandalism have been seen. More staff are employed by the railway because of the restructuring programme. Drivers are being trained more intensively, with emphasis on avoiding accidents due to signal error.

Watchdog reports lowest rail deaths but increasing crash figures
Article Abstract:
The UK Health and Safety Executive has issued a report noting that passenger deaths dropped to 17 in 1993 from 28 in 1992, but that there was an increase in accidents in that period. Deaths at railroad crossings rose to 14 from 10 in the above period, and there was a rise in injuries from railroad accidents to 129 in 1993 from 63 in 1992. Vandalism is still a problem with the number of accidents due to members of the public involved in malicious acts rising to 289 from 266.
