Bright ideas from systems users
Article Abstract:
The use of information technology (IT) in human resources management by British corporations and institutions is illustrated by the IT applications of runners-up entries in the 1992 Information Technology in Personnel awards. Among the IT applications for British companies are Smith Kline Beecham's telephone news service that utilizes voice mail technology, London Underground Ltd's computer-based fire evacuation training program, Miller Group's automated profit-related bonus scheme, and British Gas South Eastern's high-profile employee suggestion scheme run on Paradox database software. Another notable IT application is the use by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children of a 'Personnel assistant' software run on three-user networks for operations in Wales, England, and Northern Ireland.

Systems which set the pace
Article Abstract:
The 1992 Information Technology in Personnel award sponsored by the Institute of Personnel Management and Percom was given to the British Steele PLC's human resources department. Although there could only be one winner, there were several other nominees that deserved to be commended. One of these was Whitebread Inns whose 'Share-inn-success scheme' makes use of the 'Share-inn' system. This system consolidated data obtained from various other systems, data that went into the general system and payment systems automatically and an electronic point-of-scale system. Also recognized were the 'Spock' system used by the surveyor department of the Gloucestershire County Council and the computer-based fire safety training package of the Forte group's Travelodge.
