Burger King hooks employees with educational incentives
Article Abstract:
Burger King franchise owner Herb Schervish introduced an educational assistance program in 1987 for employees in an effort to motivate younger employees and to attain lower employee turnover. Schervish pays for the cost of tuition and books, depending on the number of hours worked per week. A study of the effects of this program on turnover and productivity at his Burger King franchises between September 1987-April 1988 reveals that the employees participating in the program had a turnover rate of 38%, while eligible employees not participating in the program had a turnover rate of 160%. Results also indicate that a better and more stable store was created by worker retention. Additionally, results reveal an increase in productivity of three percent.

Managing mental health costs is a balancing act
Article Abstract:
An effective corporate mental-health-care program balances the need of the company to contain costs and the right of the employee-patient to quality services. In assessing health-care costs, employers should consider several dimensions such as direct costs, indirect costs and liability costs. To ensure that employees are getting good medical treatment, it would be prudent for companies to evaluate managed-care organizations according to patient access, provider relations, expertise of personnel, thoroughness of evaluations, program flexibility, choice and conflicts of interest. Several principles that can provide guidance to companies in developing a managed-care program which considers the needs of both employers and employees are discussed.
