A balanced approach to retraining
Article Abstract:
The dynamic retraining program at GEC-Avery, a subsidiary of the General Electric Co plc, received a Special Patron's Award and a National Training Award in 1987. The three-year retraining program at W & T Avery Ltd, the UK's major weighing-machine manufacturer, affected all 2,500 employees. Strong competition had forced a product change from mechanical scales to electronic ones. New skills were therefore necessary for assembly workers, engineers for development, production, sales, and service, and administrative staff. A large investment of money, time, and people has provided job security for employees and continued market leadership. Corporate commitment to employee development ensures continuation of technological training for staff.

From franks to the future: 25 years of management training prescriptions
Article Abstract:
Considerable growth and activity is apparent in UK management education since its inception in the 1940's. The 'older order' of management emphasis on efficiency, production, conformity, and authority is shifting to a 'new order' based on enterprise, marketing, initiative, and leadership. The shortage of qualified teachers is a hindrance, because management development must be an integral part of continuous organizational development. The 'Management for the Future' research project of the Ashridge Management Research Group indicates a trend from a 'fragmented' approach to peripheral training through a 'formalized' phase to a 'focused' approach. Research also suggests that future training will be based on leadership at all levels.
