Compliance monitoring: many organisations assume that staff comply with their safety policies. How safe is this assumption?
Article Abstract:
A top London hospital undertook an assessment of compliance to health and safety policies by employees, following an incident that resulted in exposure to elemental mercury. A questionnaire was sent to employees to determine how many had experienced the mercury spill and their reactions to it. The common reaction was to place the mercury into a sharps disposal container and those junior qualified respondents using a mercury spillage kit gave warnings to others, and some claimed to have followed Trust Policy. The most popular reaction amongst senor qualified employees was to warn other people around. Some were not aware of a policy for dealing with mercury spillage and some were unaware of a mercury spillage kit.
