'Computers in Personnel' conference puts the spotlight on cost effectiveness

The London conference jointly sponsored by the Institute of Personnel Management and the Institute of Manpower Studies, known as 'Computers in Personnel', focused on several cost-effective automation techniques in the personnel management area and discussed applications of such systems at ICI, IBM and the BBC. The systems described are large, ranging in size from 53,000 employees at ICI to 900 offices at IBM. The systems function to process payroll, provide communications hook-ups, assist in recruiting employees, and project manpower requirements. The systems installed also allow personnel directors and corporate officers to retrieve personnel information in various sort forms, including: by department, by sex of employee, by individual, and by age or length of service.

Personnel starts to take the lead in introducing and updating systems

In Great Britain, personnel managers are becoming more confident at using computers, according to reports from a recent conference on computers in personnel sponsored by the Institute of Manpower Studies and the Institute of Personnel Managers. The conference studied models of personal computers, the impact of microcomputers and recent changes in the machines that help personnel managers to do their jobs. Several cases studies were presented at the conference and these are summarized. The conference noted that personal computers are like personnel managers, in that both can improve the effectiveness of line managers and supervisors if properly employed.

Computers as a strategic personnel tool
Article Abstract:
Automobile manufacturer Nissan began using computer systems at its Sunderland, UK plant in 1986 for personnel systems planning and control operations. Computerization of the personnel function required about 18 months. Percom software was employed, with the eventual addition of the Lotus 'Symphony' software package. Jun 1987 marked the addition of a computerized recruitment management arrangement. Other personnel functions and issues addressed through computer management include: manpower planning, analysis of the current work force, performance appraisal, succession planning, and organization charting.
