Disability at work: employers' policies and practices
Article Abstract:
Many UK employers are planning to institute disabled workers' policies in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, according to a survey of 54 organizations. Almost 75% of those surveyed already had established policies on employing disabled workers, although many planned to modify their policies to conform with the Act. Customer service and disabled employees' commitment are cited as positive reasons for hiring the disabled. Employers' fears regarding disabled employees are generally unfounded. Costs, monitoring, and rehabilitation programs are also discussed.

Disability policies "widespread" among employers
Article Abstract:
A 1997 Equal Opportunities Review survey indicated 87% of employers surveyed had a written policy on hiring or accommodating disabled employees. A sizable number of employers had modified policies in anticipation of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 statutory changes. The study indicated nearly all employers had allocated DDA compliance responsibilities, but most had not surveyed their workforces to determine the numbers of employees defined as disabled. The majority did not believe making reasonable workplace adjustments for disabled staff would prove problematic.

Changing disability policies at Lancashire County Council
Article Abstract:
Lancashire County Council, one of the UK larger councils, exemplifies the many employers who are revamping disability employment policies to conform with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. The council's existing policies on disability definitions, disabled staff surveys, and on reasonable accommodation of disabled employees will be revised following a consultation process. The council has long been committed to equal opportunity employment policies and, in 1994, adopted the "two ticks" disability symbol and its associated policies on disabled employees.
