Distributed management and self-directed teamworking at Miller Brewing
Article Abstract:
Miller Brewing designed a work system requiring hourly-paid workers to assume what are usually seen as management responsibilities when preparing to set up its Trenton, Ohio plant in 1990. Self-directed teams, a "starpoint" system involving individual team members assuming lead responsibilities for activities such as quality, maintenance, and personnel, are the way this is done. Miller did not design this work system in partnership with the union, but stated it would work with whatever union the employees chose.
