EARTH TECH recycles corporate environment
Article Abstract:
The human resources (HR) department of EARTH TECH played a key role in the integration of the two companies that were merged in May 1994 to form it. The merger, which united the operations of the Summit Environmental Group and Earth Technology Corp., led to the establishment of EARTH TECH, a new Long Beach, CA-based environmental remediation company with a workforce of some 1,400 employees and turnover of $145 million in 1994. Since then, the company has undertaken another strategic expansion through its acquisition of HazWaste Industries in early 1995, a move that raises EARTH TECH's annual revenues to over $200 million and establishes the company as one of the top 20 environmental services firms in the US. In both the merger and the subsequent acquisition deal, responsibility for planning HR's role lay with Carole L. Collins, who focused her efforts on the streamlining of compensation and benefits and the participation of employees in the merger process.

Papa John's rolls out hot HR menu
Article Abstract:
Louisville, KY-based Papa John's International Inc. is one of the fastest-growing pizza chains in the US. The company, founded in 1985, topped the list of Business Week's 1994 100 Best Small Companies in America based on its three-year performance in earnings growth, sales growth and return on invested capital. It reported total revenue of $161.5 million in 1994 and has now 751 stores in 20 states. To maintain the firm's competitiveness, founder and CEO John C. Schnatter decided to create a personnel department in 1993 and hired Carole A. Trask as the first vice president of HR. In view of the stiff competition for quality personnel in the $30 billion-a-year pizza industry, Schnatter is determined to find the best people for Papa Johns. The job of Trask and her department is to standardize the company's culture, benefits packages and recruitment strategies to survive and succeed in a competitive marketplace.

Racing toward a new horizon in banking
Article Abstract:
Increasing consolidation in the banking industry leaves banks such as Bancorp Hawaii Inc. with no other choice but to capitalize on their strengths to meet the demands of their customers. Bancorp, the largest financial institution in the Pacific region, and its biggest subsidiary, the Bank of Hawaii, are positioning themselves for the marketplace of the 21st century by implementing a strategic plan called 'Bancorp 2000.' This blueprint for future success calls for bigger investments in terms of time, money and effort in the five critical areas: technology, information, asset mix, delivery channels and cultural change. The HR department is supporting this plan by working towards creating a performance-oriented culture through training and development, enhancing compensation packages, and improving virtual customer service.
