Emerging organizational regimes in high technology firms: the bi-modal form
Article Abstract:
A three-phase study of 33 high technology businesses in California's Silicon Valley was conducted to examine the organizational design utilized in the firms. Typically, high technology firms must combine contrasting variables such as creativity and discipline to achieve success. As a result, a bi-modal organizational form has developed which combines decentralized and centralized management structures. Research results indicate that organizational forms utilized in high technology firms evolve over time and include different structures during periods of growth such as: simple structures; functional structures; and hybrid structures. Results also indicate that high technology firms use structures which include both divisional and functional elements depending on business activities.

Coming unstuck? In search of the "corporate glue" in an international professional service firm
Article Abstract:
'Networks' and corporate 'culture' have been proposed to be the 'corporate glue' that can hold increasingly loosely structured multinational corporations together. A case study of personnel management in an international accounting firm is examined to determine the effectiveness of this glue in providing cohesion to these business organizations. The results suggest that business expansion and globalization may undermine the corporate glue themselves even as the necessity for the internationalization of activities becomes more pronounced. The strains of global integration put the role of traditional corporate culture in doubt by placing greater emphasis on formal bureaucratic structures and processes. Techniques for managing these stresses are suggested.

Human resource leadership in knowledge-based entities: shaping the context of work
Article Abstract:
Knowledge-based companies pose unique challenges that the human resource (HR) management function is well positioned to meet. Three imperatives are simultaneously vying for the attention of these organizations: to continue innovating, to enhance speed and agility in response to shorter product and service lifecycles, and to be able to respond to sudden changes in the marketplace. These demands require a work context that can equally address the need for physical and virtual colocation, can achieve alignment, and can promote creativity and agility. HR practitioners help shape the context of work in various capacities. Their roles as the 'orgitech,' the 'hub,' the 'vendor' and the 'glue' are discussed.
