Employment Earnings and Hours, New York Combined Area
Article Abstract:
Tables of data on employees' earnings and hours by industrial sector in New York's Combined Area are featured. The Combined Area includes New York City, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties. Total nonagricultural employment for the area was up by about 35,000 persons from September to October of 1983. The October 1983, total exceeded the October 1982, total by about 20,000 persons. Statistics are given for durable and non-durable goods manufacturing, nonmanufacturing, mining, construction, transportation, wholesale and retail trade, finance, service sector and government employment. New York City alone had 355,000 nondurable goods workers and over 92,000 durable goods workers.

In the New York combined area, which consists of New York City and Nassau, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties, total nonagricultural employment equalled 4,788,000 persons. Manufacturing provided work for 700,000 persons in June of 1983. Mining employed only 1,000 persons. Other employment sectors are included. In New York City, total nonagricultural employment equalled 3,365,000 persons in June of 1983. Major employment sectors are broken down into more specific categories for durable and non-durable goods. Westchester's total nonagricultural employment equalled 358,000 persons.

Employment of Women Workers
Article Abstract:
September 1983 tables show the number of women working in all manufacturing sectors in New York as 1,320,000, which is 9,000 more than the month before. It is 45,000 fewer than the total for September 1982. Women were thirty-five per cent of the total work force in both September 1982 and September 1983, though fewer women worked in 1983. Statistics of women workers for the New York Combined Area and Upstate Areas are given. 50,000 women worked in durable goods manufacturing in September 1983 in Upstate areas.
