European patterns in working time
Article Abstract:
On a country by country basis, the trends of European corporations concerning working time are examined. The information was compiled for the European Association for Personnel Management. Working weeks, the report found, range from 38 hours for a few firms in Europe to 43 in Turkey. Vacations ranged from 20 days minimum in Belgium to a maximum of 30 days in Germany. The work day and vacation norms for Austria, Belgium, Finland, West Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom are assessed based on the results of surveys in these countries. Also discussed are collective and selective work day reductions, fixed and flexible extended operating time, and part-time work and employment in the home.

'I'm in personnel.' (Kathryn Riley at the NatWest Investment Bank)
Article Abstract:
Kathryn Riley, employed at Nat West Investment Bank (NWIB), discusses city salaries, and her position in the risky, but high-reward, investment bank sector. The current high salaries are reflective of intense competition over a small number of qualified people, and money and bonuses are major recruiting incentives. Her job, with its emphasis on recruitment, and development of compensation packages, has forced her to become realistic about salaries as the right people must be hired to succeed in a tough market. In discussing her own work history, she makes observations about obstacles to women that have been caused by sexism.
