HR and operations work together at Texas Instruments. (human resources)(includes related article)
Article Abstract:
Texas Instruments Inc facilitates a more effective policy for selecting and promoting employees by including operations management in decision-making processes relating to human resources (HR) issues. This new joint effort between HR personnel and operations management is implemented through two management teams, the Human Resources Operating Committee and the Human Resources Policy Committee (HRPC). The HR Operating Committee, which is made up of HR personnel, is tasked with policy development at the draft stage. The HRPC, as constituted by operating managers, then works on the draft policies to produce the final HR policies. The participation of operations at every phase of policy development and implementation has resulted in a leaner organizational structure for Texas Instruments wherein mutual trust is high and open communication thrives.

MBO makes dollar sense
Article Abstract:
Boehringer Mannheim Corp (Indianapolis, IN) recently applied the techniques of Management by Objectives (MBO) to increase company profits, labor productivity, and teamwork. One of the main reasons MBO techniques have been so successful in the company is that they have been connected to corporate strategy, and they have been implemented using a financial framework. Additionally, the MBO techniques have been taught in employee training seminars that everyone, including the CEO, has attended. The results of implementing MBO techniques for Boehringer have been positive. Greater emphasis is now placed on results; the company has experienced an expansion in entrepreneurism; and employees now feel an expanded sense of contribution toward the company.
