Exploding the myth of greenfield sites
Article Abstract:
Employee attitude surveys conducted in three greenfield sites refute widely perceived advantages of the 'greenfield site' approach to personnel management. Results show that greenfield employees actually consider job security and good pay more important than interesting work. They also expressed disappointment over the amount of training they received and pay relativities within plants. Although a majority articulated their desire for a promotion, a portion of this group believed that any advancement is not possible at all. Furthermore, the survey shows that greenfield workers are less involved in decisions than common workers. In view of these discoveries, many are predictably dissatisfied with managers. The general mood of discontentment pervading greenfield sites can be traced to heightened expectations that are not being met.

Declining sectors and strategies within the area of human resources: a case study from Spain
Article Abstract:
Businesses operating in declining markets must formulate an appropriate generic strategy, develop a social strategy and adjust structures in order to survive. Other less rational and strategic factors must also be considered during the adjustment process which may not be as linear as hoped. A case study of a Spanish state-owned shipyard is presented to explore the empirical and theoretical observations and to analyse the company's social and generic strategies.
