Factors affecting pre-arbitral settlement of rights disputes: predicting the method of rights dispute resolution
Article Abstract:
Pre-arbitral settlements of grievance disputes are considered to be more desirable in many ways than are arbitral dispute settlements; it would be helpful, therefore, to know which variables are either conducive to or a hindrance to pre-arbitral settlements. This study identifies and examines characteristics associated with both pre-arbitral settlements of grievance disputes and settlements of grievance disputes through issuance of an arbitration award. Data were gathered from 130 randomly-selected cases that were privately settled after submission to arbitration from March through July 1983, and from 130 randomly-selected cases that were arbitrated during the same period of time. The results of discriminant analysis show that the only significant discriminant variable between the two types of cases is the degree of legal representation. Cases in which neither party is represented tend to produce pre-arbitral settlements; cases in which both parties are represented tend to produce arbitrated settlements.

The arbitration literature: who contributes?
Article Abstract:
Who shapes, fashions, and molds the body of labor arbitral thought? This article answers this question and identifies the characteristics of those who contribute to the arbitration literature. Factor analysis was applied to and descriptive statistics calculated for data on 540 authors whose works the Committee on Research of the National Academy of Arbitrators believes constitute the most complete compendium of important arbitration literature available. The study concludes that members of the National Academy are more productive than nonmembers; for both members and nonmembers, practicing attorneys publish more arbitration awards than do professors; and practicing attorneys publish more articles, books, and monographs than do professors. Strike activity in the United States: an analysis of the stocks and flows
Article Abstract:
A dichotomy has been noticed among researchers between the stocks and flows of U.S. strike activity, with a canonical correlation analysis used here on strike data from 1955 through 1980 to discover whether economic or socio-political strike models are better at explaining stocks and flows of strikes. It is shown that economic variables are more important in flow variation explanations, while variations in strike stocks are explained better using linear time trend along with economic variables. This indicates that the explanation of strike stocks relies more on organizational variables.
