Global HR inroads paved at conference: HR pioneers explore the road less travelled
Article Abstract:
Personnel Journal's first-ever 'Global Business Leadership Through HR' conference focused the attention of HR professionals on the opportunities and challenges facing the field of personnel management as the pace of business globalization accelerates. The event, held in San Francisco, CA, from Oct. 16 to 18, 1995, enabled HR practitioners from all over the world to exchange information, advice and experiences on a wide variety of global HR issues. Among the topics covered were cultural differences, international health care issues, employment-taxation problems, expatriate relocation and employee repatriation, global HRMS systems, performance rating, and overseas legal issues. To prepare for HR in the 21st century, attendees were reminded to position the HR department for greater internationalization of business, to adapt their practices to foreign markets, and to develop a more globalized recruitment and personnel management strategy.

The global talent search
Article Abstract:
Larger business enterprises and international business enterprises are more likely to look at foreign nationals as a source of talent to fill their manpower needs, especially in areas with low unemployment. Human resources professionals are increasingly appreciating the value of inducting international talent into their operations, but they are faced with many obstacles in locating, recruiting, hiring, and placing those individuals. To ease into a global mindset, companies should start with events that are primarily symbolic, such as holding board of directors' meetings overseas, then gradually moving on to other global activities, such as trips, assignments, and establishing overseas offices. Although senior executives understand the importance of international staffing, many line managers are still reluctant to accept the transition, leaving corporations with a lot of work to do internally.
