Unlocking employee performance: pay for performance
Article Abstract:
There must be a systematic connection between employee behavior and rewards if employers are to get the maximum performance from their employees. Rewards must be meaningful if they are to be effective; superior employees must be paid more than average employees. Incentive plans should be made as soon as the budget is known, finding out from finance or personnel departments how much latitude in pay is given to managers. Performance rewards should be given for performance only. One alternative to traditional salary increase awards is to give 'spot' awards, in which funds are used from operating budgets to reward performance on a discretionary basis. To be effective, however, the spot awards must be tied to broader group goals, the employees must be involved in the selection process, and the access to awards must be fair to all employees. Tangible and intangible non-financial rewards can also be administered.

Unlocking employee potential: developing skills
Article Abstract:
Formal classroom training of employees does little to promote skills necessary for gaining a competitive advantage. Influencing employees on the job can be an effective personnel management tool. The keys to unlocking employee potential through skill development are: finding skill deficiencies and development opportunities, building on good performance, reducing skill deficits, and making preparations for the future. Managers must foster a climate for unlocking employee potential by making the necessary time commitment, having a good sense of company and unit direction, showing genuine interest in workers, being an active listener, providing employees with clear and frank feedback, reinforcing and encouraging appropriate performance, and demonstrating flexibility.

Unlocking employee potential: managing performance
Article Abstract:
Employee motivation can be stimulated by taking several easy steps. Explaining the employee role in the larger picture of corporate objectives gives employees a feeling of belonging. Explicitly stating over-all corporate values as well as individual job requirements improves employee morale. Providing career incentives such as special projects or study groups and insuring definite links between performance and rewards can also upgrade employee self-esteem.
