HRMS planning pays off
Article Abstract:
Many human resources management systems (HRMS) a focus on issues which are not actually problems, problems which are not well defined or are misunderstood, or on challenges better faced without automation. A strategic approach is recommended for ensuring that automation money is spent on projects most likely to yield satisfactory results, but strategic planning is often ignored in developing or upgrading HRMS. Steps in developing strategic HRMS include: comprehending business objectives, processes, and information; and emphasizing processes that transform data. The purpose of defining an HRMS business model is to identify automation targets. Qualities to be addressed in making such assessments include: occurrences, volumes, tight processing time windows, repetitiveness, strategic necessity, and geographic decentralization.

Select the right IS project manager for success
Article Abstract:
Top management support and effective project management are essential to the success of any information systems (IS) program. Managers put in charge of such projects should be 'renaissance' people who possess certain qualities and skills. These include deep knowledge of the project's business objectives, the power and will to commit needed resources to the project, and the ability to communicate the system's effects to users. IS project managers must also possess adequate technical competence, above-average political and people management skills, and a solid track record in pushing projects forward despite difficulties. In addition, they should be mature enough to take full responsibility for the project, should have stamina and should possess a sense of humor.
